The ASC received word of the passing of Obby Chibuluma on the 30th of October 2015.
Obby Chibuluma spent may years supporting the collective efforts to build peace in Southern Africa, across the continent and around the world. He dedicated his life to pan-african solidarity and was a central member of the ACTION for Conflict transformation network. Involved in GPPAC, the Southern African Social Forum and the national peace collective in Zambia. Obby was also coordinator of the Coalition for Peace in Africa, a sibling organisation of ACTION for several years, based out of our regional office in Johannesburg.
Obby was always at hand when the movement called for an extra pair of hands. His ability to forge longstanding relationships, to cross the divides between different groups of people, and to connect the short term strategies for peacebuilding to the longer term vision for a unified Africa made a significant difference to our shared efforts to add the spirit of peace to our common humanity.
At the recent Conflict Transformation Encounter hosted by the ASC in 2014 Obby reminded all of us of the role each individual has to play in finding new ways of thinking about the unique manner in which each of us can contribute to building a more peaceful world.
The shared memories Obby created for so many of us make his swift passing all the more difficult to come to terms with. Our condolences go out to his family and closest friends, and our love for this valued member of our community push us all never to forget the fleeting nature of our existence, and the importance of making the most of the short time we have together. Comrade Chibuluma you will be remembered in our hearts forever.
Go well Obby, Hamba Kahle, forwards ever, backwards never!
